Product photography refers to taking photos of products with a plain background in order to prevent any distractions and grab the viewer’s attention. Product photography is very important especially to those people who want to sell products through their websites or on eBay.
A good product image can make your listings more effective and boost your sales. Once you have decided to take a product photography image, push a table against a wall. Take a large piece of white card and attach one end to the wall and the other end to the table.
The bend of the card should be curved to help create a seamless background for the product’s image. After this, set up flashes or couples of lights to light the products and the background.
Two light setups can create better photos than depending on natural light. Being able to control the shape, power, size, and positioning of lighting will give you better control over how the photos will look like. Small speed lights, hot lamps, and full-size flash strobes usually work well for lighting.
To hold your lights in place use light stands. This will help keep the lighting consistent between shots. The lighting should be diffused to avoid harsh shadows that may distract the image of your product.
There are large accessories in the market to help diffuse the lighting. Some of the common diffusion techniques include a reflector, softbox, and reflective umbrella. Diffusing the light will help bring out the detail and texture in the product without causing clipped highlights and harsh shadows.
Position the product on your backdrop and set up your camera on a tripod. A focal length of 35mm to 100mm works well for product photography. It is wise to take test shots adjusting the brightness of lights if necessary and positioning the lights to help bring about perfect lighting.
Place the product on a piece of Perspex plastic if you want a reflection underneath your product. Take different shots of your product at different angles. At times, only changing the position of your product and adjusting the position of your camera slightly can make such a huge difference.
A macro lens may be needed depending on the size of your product. Macro lenses are designed to focus at close distances and maintain sharpness. Other lenses may have degraded image quality when you take shots at close range.
